Exploring the South Island, New Zealand

There’s something special about seeing the world through someone else’s lens — especially when that someone lives for slow travel, wild adventures, and chasing golden light.

We recently teamed up with @oakieonfilm for their final few weeks on the road in Aotearoa, exploring the South Island in their trusty old Mercedes van. For 18 months, they’ve been roaming New Zealand, and to cap it all off, they set off on an epic winter road trip with us, capturing their adventures in the ultimate Will & Bear winter hats. From chunky beanies to cosy bucket hats, these are the styles that kept them warm (and looking good) from coast to mountains to forest.

1. Meet the Crew

Tarn & Reece, the dreamers behind @oakieonfilm

Tarn & Reece are a photographers with a gift for capturing the little moments that make big adventures unforgettable. Their photos are all about warmth, connection, and the magic of slow travel — from golden sunsets to chai by the river. Equally at home behind the wheel of their vintage Mercedes van or hiking to find the next great view.

Kaikōura – Fires by the Coast

First stop: Kaikōura. Known for its dramatic black sand beaches, snow-capped mountain views, and abundant wildlife, it’s a must-see for any South Island trip. The weather turned chilly, but that didn’t slow them down. Instead, they lit a fire on the beach, layered up, and pulled on their Willow Chunky Beanies (Tarn in Brown, Reece in Cream).

There’s nothing quite like a winter beanie to keep you toasty on a crisp coastal evening — simple, packable, and ready for wherever the road takes you.

Mountains – Road-tripping to Aoraki

From Kaikōura, they wound their way through Lake Ōhau to Lake Pukaki, stopping often to take in the view of Aoraki/Mt Cook standing tall in the distance. It was one of those magic days — made even better when their best mates joined the adventure.

For these mountain days, Tarn and Kendall chose the Teddy Ugg Bucket Hat in Brown and Fawn. Soft, cosy, and endlessly wearable, a winter bucket hat is the perfect road trip essential: warm for those icy mornings, but just as at home on a trail or at a pitstop café.

Forests – Waterfalls & Wild Chai

Before heading back to the coastline, they couldn’t resist a detour through one of New Zealand’s lushest landscapes. Hiking the Sharplin Falls Track in Mt Somers, they discovered mossy trails, crystal-clear rivers, and a stunning waterfall — the kind of place that makes you want to stay all day.

They brewed chai by the river, listened to the bird song, and Tarn even braved a freezing cold swim (followed by a very quick warm-up in her Teddy Ugg Bucket Hat). These are the moments where the right winter hat makes all the difference — one that keeps you snug, dry, and ready for whatever adventure pops up.

Why we love this journey.

This trip wasn’t just about the views — it was about slowing down, soaking it in, and sharing the magic of Aotearoa. We’re beyond stoked that @oakieonfilm chose Will & Bear’s winter bucket hats and chunky beanies to take along for the ride.

If you’re planning your own winter road trip — whether it’s through New Zealand or closer to home — our winter hats are designed for days like these: rugged enough for the wild, stylish enough for the pub, and soft enough to wear all day.

If you enjoyed this glimpse into their world, you’ll love the rest — Tarn & Reece’s travels are full of rugged roads, good gear, and moments that stay with you.
